Eight weeks ago, I made one of the scariest decisions of my fitness journey so far: I chose to eat more food.
For years, I had been living in the mindset so many of us women know well: work harder, eat less, push more cardio. I was stuck in this cycle — tired, frustrated, and wondering why all my effort wasn’t showing up in the mirror. I would work my tail off in the gym, but my body seemed to fight me every step of the way.
Then one day I asked myself, what if the problem isn’t that I’m not working hard enough…what if the problem is that I’m not fueling my body enough?
That question led me down the path of researching reverse dieting — a method that terrified me at first, but also felt like the exact reset my body needed.
What Is Reverse Dieting?
For those unfamiliar, reverse dieting is the process of slowly increasing your calories after a dieting phase to bring your metabolism back to life. Instead of dropping calories lower and lower, you carefully add food back in — usually through carbs — to give your body the energy it actually needs to build muscle, recover, and thrive.
It sounds simple, but mentally, it’s tough. Eating more food when you’ve spent years being told to eat less feels like breaking all the “rules.”
My Starting Point
When I started, my daily intake was about:
- 1700 calories
- 130g protein, 130g carbs, 66g fat
My workouts were cardio-heavy: 4–5 days of cardio and just 2 days of lifting. On paper, that should have worked. But in reality, my energy was low, my strength was stagnant, and my results weren’t coming.
Where I Am Now (Week 8)
Today, at week 8, my macros look like this:
- 2150 calories
- 140g protein, 220g carbs, 66g fat
I’ve been increasing calories slowly, just 50–75 a week, with all of it coming from carbs. I’ve also shifted my training: 2 light cardio days, 3 lifting days, and around 12,000 steps daily.
And here’s the crazy part: I feel better than I have in years.
The Stress Was Real
The first two weeks were rough. I’ll be honest: the scale jumped up 8 pounds almost overnight, and I wanted to quit. My old fears came rushing back — I’m gaining weight, I’m ruining my progress, I need to cut back again.
But then, something amazing happened. My weight stabilized. That 8-pound spike? Mostly water and glycogen. Since then, I’ve only gained about 3–4 pounds total, even while adding nearly 500 calories to my diet. Now I notice a pattern: when I bump calories, the scale rises for a day or two, then settles back down.
And here’s what I’ve re-learned: that “weight” I gained wasn’t fat. It was a combination of muscle growth and my muscles holding onto more glycogen and water — which actually makes me stronger, more energized, and better fueled for my workouts.
It taught me something powerful: the scale isn’t the whole story.
The Wins I Didn’t Expect
Even though the mental side has been tough, the successes keep me going:
- My body fat has actually dropped 1–2%.
- My workouts are stronger and my recovery is faster — carbs really are fuel.
- My glutes are finally growing. For years, I worked so hard and stayed flat. Now, with fuel, my body is actually responding.
- My energy, mood, and confidence are all higher.
The irony? Eating more has made me feel lighter — not in weight, but in the freedom of knowing my body is thriving.
Why This Matters for Women
So many women are stuck where I was — chronically under-eating, running on fumes, wondering why results won’t come. We think the answer is less. But often, the answer is actually more.
Reverse dieting isn’t just about food; it’s about healing your metabolism, teaching your body it’s safe, and letting go of fear. Yes, the scale might jump. Yes, it’s uncomfortable. But it’s also where growth and strength begin.
My Takeaway So Far
Eight weeks in, I’m learning to trust my body more than I trust the scale. I’m learning that food is fuel, not the enemy. And I’m learning that strength and shape don’t come from eating less — they come from eating enough.
If you’ve been stuck in yo-yo dieting, if you’re exhausted and frustrated, I hope my story shows you there’s another way. You don’t have to live in fear of food. You can heal your body. You can trust the process. And you can thrive.
I’m only at the beginning of this journey, but I already know this: reverse dieting is worth it.
